Demystifying Digital Product Passports: From ESPR Requirements to DPP Readiness

Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are set to transform how product information is created, verified, shared and accessed across the textile and apparel value chain.

Under the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), textiles and footwear have been identified as a priority product group. While the textile-specific Delegated Act and final DPP data requirements are still being developed, the direction is becoming increasingly clear. Businesses will need to prepare structured and accessible product information across areas such as product identity, materials and composition, supply-chain traceability, durability, recyclability, recycled content, substances of concern and potentially environmental performance.

The regulatory journey has already begun. ESPR entered into force in 2024, and the first ESPR Working Plan covering 2025–2030 prioritizes textiles and footwear. Technical and product-specific requirements are now being developed, giving businesses an important window to understand their readiness, identify data and evidence gaps, and begin preparing their products, suppliers and systems.
